What to pack

Taking off from Mana West Airstrip, Zimbabwe

Your safari suitcase
This must be a soft bag so it can be loaded into the undercarriage of small airplanes, or under the seats of the safari vehicle, and dust proof. Wheels, frames or rigid structures, cannot be loaded as they will not physically fit into the aircraft. Acceptable dimensions for bags are 25cm wide x 30cm high x 62cm long. 20kg - including camera equipment and hand luggage - is the maximum baggage weight allowed. Safety regulations do not allow for exceptions.

Day bag
A small day pack, which can double as a handbag, and which you can keep with you, is essential. The contents are included in the 20kg allowed per person.

Your safari clothing
It is best to dress in layers, due to varying activities and fluctuating temperatures. Cotton and linen (if you don’t mind the creases!) or other light, breathable fabrics that are also quick drying, yet strong, are ideal. Sleeves protect against the sun and insects. Very skimpy or revealing clothing is not suitable climatically, or culturally. Good quality fleece is perfect for warm items, such as zip-up jackets, hats, scarves and gloves. Bring these in winter, plus warm socks! Waterproof ponchos and blankets are supplied in game vehicles for rain and cold.

Colours
Pack muted neutrals - beige, khaki, tan and camel. Whites are unsuitable for game walks and drives - you want to blend in. Black is very hot for the day, and both black and bright blue attract insects. Camouflage and military style clothing is not allowed in some countries so should be avoided. Casual clothing is the most suitable safari wear - there is no need to ‘dress for dinner’ on safari, and heavy, jangling jewellery will weigh you down.

Pack light
Most camps and lodges offer a free laundry service (except for underwear) so you can keep things simple and pack light.

Please feel free to Contact Us if you have any questions about what to pack. We will send you our detailed Simply Africa Packing Checklist, put together over many years of being on safari, when you have chosen your personal trip.
